Child and mother

Children who experience challenges or adversities during their childhood are six to 10 times more likely to develop mental health problems later on in life.

The Centre of Research Excellence in Childhood Adversity and Mental Health is co-designed to improve children’s mental health through early detection and response to family adversity.

About the centre

The CRE in Childhood Adversity and Mental Health brings together families with lived experience, practitioners, researchers and policymakers from health, social care, and legal sectors to prevent the significant mental health burden experienced by children and families experiencing adversity.

Child and Family Hubs

Our Child and Family Hubs, are co-designed with families and practitioners. They prioritise collaboration with end users to create spaces aimed at enhancing children's mental well-being through early detection and response to family challenges. These Hubs are designed to bring together a variety of health (including medical and allied health) and social care professionals.

By doing so, we aim to improve the identification of family challenges as a preventable factor influencing mental health issues. Additionally, our focus extends to addressing existing concerns for children aged newborn to eight years and their families, ensuring comprehensive support and intervention.
